Salvation Through Water Heaters
I’ve always been a bit handy with tools and DIY repairs but more than that, the frequent disposal and replacement of appliances disgusts me. Maybe it’s the engineer in me but I find it ridiculous and wasteful for the normal life expectancy of appliances is on average 6 years before major problems arise and the experts say, “It’s best to replace the entire unit”. Guess what the plumber said about my parent’s Water Heater, a mere 3 years old at the time when it started making all sorts of “Popping and Banging” sounds because of the built-up sediment encrusted inside the tank. Now the plumber wasn’t wrong, there was no simple way to remove the sediment (rock-like slurry from minerals in the water – we’ll get more into that later). You can do it yourself with this method:
As you can imagine, most people would opt to replace the entire Water Heater, but at only 3 years old I felt compelled to investigate and fix it. Oh, boy did I! I learned of this fantastic invention and put it to use with my goal of extracting the sediment from the Water Heater without disassembly. After a fair bit of experimenting, I successfully removed about 6 POUNDS of pureed sediment that half-filled a 5-gallon bucket. Needless to say, their Water Heater was renewed, it’s as efficient as new, and I saved them $1500 on a replacement. A shock went through me as I realized this in no way is an isolated issue, millions of people unnecessarily scrap water heaters annually, when all they need is to be renewed with my method.
