Win Some, Lose Some, Win ’em Back!
Another tale from what seems like forever ago when I first started my Water Heater renewal business. Coming on a streak of renewing every Water Heater I ran into, I finally met my match: A cheaper, low-end unit in a tiny closet in a manufactured home. I’ve serviced tanks like this before, in similar confined spaces but this was a bad scenario for 2 reasons.
- The Tank had an odd flimsy style plastic drain valve
- The Owner couldn’t shut the Cold Water Inlet valve fully
Why do these 2 issues make the job a no-go, you ask? Because I was sure I would break off the weak little drain valve if I tried to remove it (a necessity for my renewal service). Usually not a big issue, as I carry the tools needed to extract a broken drain valve, which I then replace with a brass metal one as a free upgrade. But in this case, I was very confined, and the larger issue was the water would not fully shut off, meaning it would gush out and ruin her floors. Not an acceptable risk in my opinion. The homeowner was upset I couldn’t renew her Water Heater, as it desperately needed it, and she couldn’t afford a replacement. Bing! An Idea! I could still help! I reconfigured my gear and was able to reverse flush her Water Heater, thus removing some loose sediment and providing her with some peace of mind.
